The
Area
|
Durness is on the corner of the road networks and natural stopping place. The
scenery around here is magnificent and for those accustomed to city
dwelling the sheer scale of the landscape is awe inspiring.
|
This is
surely one of the most beautiful areas of Europe with sparkling rivers,
scattered lochs, shimmering beaches, rugged mountains and vast expanses
of open moorland, where visitors will find peace and quietness; an
absolute abundance of wildlife, clean, uncrowded beaches; some of the
world's great fishing; and space in which to enjoy the clear invigorating
air.

Smoo Cave is located at the
eastern edge of the village of Durness, on Scotland's most northerly coastline. A trip to Smoo Cave has to be included in any stay in
Durness.
Set into limestone cliffs, Smoo Cave is quite large - 200 feet long, 130
feet wide, and 50 feet high at the entrance.
|
|
Eighteen
kilometers from Durness Village is the most north-westerly point on the
British mainland. The Cape Wrath
lighthouse stands more than 121 meters above sea level on
staggering cliffs facing the stormy Atlantic Ocean.Scotland’s most north westerly point can only be reached by a bus
journey of about 11 miles through wild unspoiled scenery. Some of
Britain’s highest cliffs, seabirds, wildlife, seals and the
spectacular Cape Wrath Lighthouse.

A
walking net work, a ruined church, numerous archeological features,
geology, natural history in all its guises make the area a destination
for the lover of the unspoilt natural environment.
